STRENGTHEN THE CHURCH OFFERING
- Four times a year, Pilgrim receives a special offering in support of our denomination's mission efforts. On May 23, we will be collecting the "Strengthen the Church" offering. This gives resources to help the United Church of Christ prosper - especially in it's outreach efforts. Your contribution will be used in these ways:
- Funding new church starts and invigorating existing congregations
- Nurturing lay and pastoral leadership
- Building youth and young adult ministries
- Supporting the God is Still Speaking Ministry and its extravagant welcome for all within the United Church of Christ.
ICE CREAM SOCIAL
- There will be an ice cream social on Sunday, May 16 following worship. This fun event will be for all ages, so plan on enjoying some tasty ice cream and great company!
LIVING THE QUESTIONS
- Join a discussion of "Living the Questions" videos with fellow Pilgrims on Sunday, May 16, and again on Sunday, May 23, 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Pilgrim. These 20-minute videos offer commentary on central issues in Christian belief and practice by leading thinkers, many with UCC connections. These thinkers include Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, Barbara Rossing, Amy-Jill Levine, UCC minister Yvette Flunder, and John Shelby Spong. Come join us to watch a couple of these videos and share thoughts. Steve Van Evera will moderate discussion.
Summer Experiences for all Ages
- There are many opportunities available for programs and camps during the summer. Please check out the bulletin board in Pilgrim Hall for brochures and more information. You will find Boston University's Summer Speed Reading and Reading Skills programs, New England Regional Youth Event, Star Island Retreats and Family Conferences and UCC's own Pilgrim Lodge Camp. The range of offerings includes all ages so take a look!
AN INVITATION FOR MAY 21
AND MY THANKS TO YOU!
- My flutist friend, Martha Woodward, and I are preparing a recital we will play on June 19 in New London, NH. I have told Martha about the beauty of Pilgrim Church and wanted her to visit here. We are going to have a practice session in the church on Friday, May 21 at 11:00 a.m. If you would like to hear a short program of flute and piano music, by Mozart, Reinecke and others, please join us in the church that morning. Our rehearsal will be informal and we would be happy to have listeners.
- Thank you all for the great joy I have experienced during my four-month music director interim here. You have been ever welcoming and always ready to help me. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting you and making music with you, especially the choir. I am sure that David Mislin is looking forward to being back with you in June. I will do my best to come back to visit and keep in touch. You are a great congregation. As you keep true to the call of Christ, there will be many, many more blessings here.
- - Joyce Painter Rice
CONGRATULATIONS!
- Rev. Laura Ruth Jarrett, a former intern at Pilgrim, has been called as Pastor to Hope Central Church in Jamaica Plain. Her first Sunday will be June 1. Hope Church has merged with Central Congregational in J.P. so Laura Ruth will be bringing two congregations together. We wish her every blessing.

- We are looking for people who would like to be a liturgist during our worship services, next year. The role of the liturgist is a very meaningful one! He or she prepares us for worship and serves as a reminder to all of us that God is indeed in our midst!
- Whether or not you are a member of Pilgrim, your participation would be most welcome! If you are new to our church, this is actually a wonderful way for the congregation to get to know you.
- The whole process is really quite easy! Before the week you are scheduled, you will be provided with "liturgist guidelines" that tell you exactly what needs to be done. All you need to do is read the text already provided in the bulletin. Diane will even send you a copy of the bulletin a few days in advance so you can look it over. Just e-mail, or call her, with that request.
- We hope you will consider this wonderful opportunity to be part of our worship! If you wish to have your name added to the list of people who have already agreed to be readers, you may call Chris Emery, or e-mail her at This email address is being protected from spambots. PLANT SALE
MAY 15, 2010
- Don't forget the plant sale Saturday, May 15th. It is now time to clean up your gardens. We still need many plants to make this event a success. If you need pots to put the plants in, please feel free to take as many as you need. They are outside the kitchen door. When you have the pots filled you can leave them in the back of the church under the large window or bring them to the church between 7:30am and 8:45am on the day of the show, Saturday, May 15th.
- If you are able to help on the day of the sale: set up will be 7:30am to 9:00am; We will be selling from 9:00am to noon; and then clean up will be 12:00 to 12:30pm. Anyone who can help will be greatly appreciated. Please let Carolyn Beckwith ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or phone 781-275-7537) know so that we can plan.
- Also, please come to the show to purchase new plants to spiff up your garden. Prices are very reasonable. The proceeds this year will go to help the operating budget.
- I look forward to your help and support.

- In an effort to meet the needs of those who showed an interest in small group discussion groups at Pilgrim at our Visioning Session, how about a book discussion? On Tuesday, May 25th at noon a group of interested folks will get together to discuss the book, Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout. It's the story of a seventh grade math teacher who lives off the coast of Maine. Here is a description of the lead character in the book - "Olive Kitteridge is a redoubtable seventh grade math teacher who lives in Crosby, Maine. Anyone who gets in Olive's way had better watch out, for she crashes unapologetically through life like an emotional storm trooper. Although Strout manages to make her deeply human and even sympathetic." Sounds like a book that would lend itself quite well to a lively discussion! So, we'll meet at 12:00 for a book/lunch discussion group. Please plan to bring a brown bag lunch and join us! I believe the book is available in paperback and can be found at Barnes & Noble for $14. Anyone interested can contact Chris Emery at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. so we have an idea of how many can come.

FROM OUR PASTOR
Come May 1st I've been living in Lexington and serving at Pilgrim Church for one year. Naturally, I had to experience my first Patriot's Day in all its glory a few weeks ago and get better acquainted with the traditions of the town. And I certainly wasn't disappointed.
