Communion

The two sacraments in the UCC are Baptism and Communion. Each time we take Communion, we remember Jesus and his disciples before his crucifixion and resurrection. We pray for the day when sharing by all will mean scarcity for none. We remember our brothers and sisters of faith in all places and times, and praise God with joy as we observe Communion as the body of Christ, the church. We serve non-alcoholic grape juice and bread, offering rice cakes for gluten intolerance.

At Pilgrim Church, the sacrament of Communion is a symbol of Christ’s radical welcome of all people. No membership requirements or tests of faith are needed to receive Communion—all people are invited to Christ’s table. Perhaps one of our UCC Invitations to Communion says it best, “Come to this sacred table not because you must, but because you may. Come not because you are fulfilled, but because in your emptiness you stand in need of God’s mercy and assurance. Come not to express an opinion but to seek a presence and to pray for a spirit. Come to this table, then, friends, as you are.”
