Job Expectations and Responsibilities:
SEXTON
Purpose of Position:
To maintain a clean, fully functional, safe building for use by Church members, guests, and staff and by Pilgrim Nursery School students, parents and staff.
Reporting:
The Sexton reports to and is evaluated by the Pastor. The Sexton is an employee of the Pilgrim Congregational Church.
General Expectations:
The Sexton is expected to be physically at the Church from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM Monday, Wednesday and Saturday for the period September 1 through June 30, with an occasional Saturday evening, and 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM Monday and Saturday for the period July 1 through August 31.
The Sexton is expected to take her/his vacation(s) during July and/or August.
Routine Responsibilities:
1. Vacuum sanctuary, narthex, vestibule, Sun Room once per week
2. Vacuum stairs and upper level areas once per week
3. Vacuum Fellowship Hall once per week
4. Dry mop pastor's and secretary's offices once per week
5. Empty all trash cans twice per week
6. Take the recycling bins within the church to the larger (wheeled) containers located outside the church once a week. Take the wheeled containers to the curb when they get filled.
7. Clean all bathroom fixtures, mirrors and floors (wet mop) once per week
8. Dust pews as needed
9. Dry mop Pilgrim Hall twice per week
10. Wet mop the lower level hallway once per week
11. Replace indoor light bulbs except those in the sanctuary; report sanctuary light bulb outages to pastor.
12. Report any extraordinary maintenance items (eg – the furnaces are making funny noises; the thermostat in the narthex is not holding the proper temperature) to the pastor.
13. Dust all window sills, door trim, and the tops of the moveable cabinets IN Fellowship Hall once per week
14. Wet mop both kitchen floors once per week
15. Perform approved minor repairs and painting projects
16. Keep bathrooms stocked with paper toweling and toilet paper and direct secretary to reorder cleaning / maintenance supplies to keep proper levels of supplies on hand
17. Remove debris from the front, side and rear walkways as needed
18. Spot clean the carpet as needed.
19. Strip and re-wax the lower level hallway once per year.
20. Spot clean as needed throughout the week.
ALL the above-listed Routine Responsibilities shall be performed for the base salary.
Non-Routine Responsibilities:
1. Unlock the doors and set-up furniture before the following events, and clean the affected space and lock the doors after the following events:
a. Weddings
b. Funerals
c. Concerts
d. Receptions
e. Plays
f. Other events as may arise
For performing the Non-Routine Responsibilities the Sexton will be paid a fee above and beyond the base salary, which fee will be agreed upon in advance of the event.
Required Skills and Experience:
1. High school diploma or GED
2. Minimum two years experience in cleaning commercial / institutional space
3. Ability to read and comprehend instructions in English, whether verbal or written
4. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure
5. Ability to climb stairs while operating a vacuum cleaner
6. Successful completion of a complete background check, including a CORI check
All needed equipment, materials and supplies will be supplied by the Church.

FROM OUR PASTOR
As our Annual Meeting approaches, and I reflected on the various things we've done together in my Pastor's Report, I feel excited. We've had a great year so far. It's been a year of transitions, of beginnings and endings, but I sense excitement and hope when we're together on Sunday mornings and when we perform the business of the church as the body of Christ.
